embodied perceptive tutors for empathy-based learning

 

The EMOTE project is an ongoing EU-FP7 project in which we have been creating empathic artificial tutors to be used in real classrooms. These tutors serve as a tool for the teachers, by playing pedagogical games on the topics of map-reading, and sustainable development. They are able to autonomously adapt to the students and guide them throughout the activities, while also relating the activity with the goals of the curriculum.

PArCEIRO is a project led internally in the GAIPS lab. It is developing and creating social robots that will interact with humans in entertaining activities, such as tabletop card games. This projects aims to promote social interaction where the same physical space between humans and robots is shared, enhancing new ways of interacting with technology.

LIving with Robots and intEractive Companions

 

The LIREC project was a five-year EU-FP7 project that aimed at creating robotic companions that could establish long-term relationships with humans with various applications such as entertainment, domestic or office environments.

The Illusion of Robotic Life: Principles and Practices of Animation for Robots

This paper describes our approach on the development of the expression of emotions on a robot with constrained facial expressions. We adapted principles and practices of animation from Disney™ and other animators for robots, and applied them on the development of emotional expressions for the EMYS robot. Our work shows that applying animation principles to robots is beneficial for human understanding of the robots' emotions.

This chapter describes current advances in emotion modeling for social robots. It begins by contextualizing the role of emotions in social robots, considering the concept of the affective loop. It describes a number of elements for the synthesis and expression of emotions through robotic embodiments and provides an overview of emotional adaptation and empathy in social robots.

Creating Interactive Robotic Characters: Through a combination of artificial intelligence and professional animation

We are integrating artificial intelligent agents with generic animation systems in order to provide socially interactive robots with expressive behavior defined by animation artists. Such animators will therefore be able to apply principles of traditional and 3D animation to such robotic systems, and thus allow to achieve the illusion of life in robots. Our work requires studies and interactive scenario development alongside with the artists.
